How to Take BART From SFO: Step by Step
Step 1 — Find the AirTrain
After baggage claim, follow the blue “AirTrain” signs. Every terminal at SFO has AirTrain access — you don’t need to go outside or cross any roads. The AirTrain is free and runs continuously, about every 3–4 minutes.
Step 2 — Ride to Garage G / BART Station
Board the AirTrain and ride to the Garage G / BART Station stop. This is the only stop where you can access BART — don’t get off anywhere else. The ride takes 5–8 minutes depending on which terminal you’re coming from.
From the International Terminal: After clearing customs, turn right, take the escalator up to the departures level, walk straight ahead and turn left at the art exhibit — you’ll see the AirTrain entrance directly. It’s a 3-minute walk maximum.
Step 3 — Pay at the Fare Gate
At the BART fare gate, tap your contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay directly on the reader. No ticket needed, no app required. If you want to pay cash, use the ticket machines to the side — but contactless is faster.
Important: BART charges your card both when you enter AND when you exit. Make sure you have enough balance or credit available for both. If you run short on a Clipper card, use the “Add Fare” machine inside the exit station before tapping out.
Step 4 — Board Toward San Francisco
All BART trains departing from SFO head toward San Francisco — you can’t board the wrong direction. Check the overhead displays for the line name and destination. The Yellow Line (Antioch) and Blue Line (Dublin/Pleasanton) both serve downtown SF stops. Either works.

BART Hours From SFO
Monday–Friday: First train ~4:00am / Last train ~midnight

Contactless Payment (Easiest)

Clipper Card

Cash

- Destinations not near a BART stop: BART gets you to downtown SF efficiently, but if your hotel is in the Sunset District, Noe Valley, or another neighborhood without a BART stop, you’ll need Muni or a rideshare for the last mile anyway. Factor that into the total cost.
- Mobility limitations: BART is ADA accessible with elevators, but if navigating a transit system is genuinely difficult, a direct rideshare or taxi may be worth the cost.
